This exquisite limited-edition aquatint etching by renowned American artist Arthur Nevin captures the timeless charm of a traditional loon decoy, rendered with meticulous realism and a deep reverence for American folk art. Titled Artic Loon Decoy II - 1988, the piece depicts a stylized Arctic loon in a serene swimming pose, showcasing its distinctive blue/teal head, red eye, white neck collar, black-and-white checkered back patterning, and subtle orange wing accents. The composition isolates the decoy against a minimalist cream background, emphasizing its sculptural form, textured patina, and hand-carved details—elevating a humble hunting tool to a work of fine art. Framed in classic dark wood molding with brass corners and double matting, it is pencil-signed by the artist, enhancing its collectible appeal. Perfect for wildlife enthusiasts, rustic cabin decor, or lovers of sporting art, this piece brings a touch of natural history and nostalgia to any space.
Arthur Finley Nevin (1929–2020) was a celebrated American printmaker, painter, and master etcher born in New York City, whose passion for wildfowl decoys stemmed from his childhood experiences hunting in the eastern U.S. marshlands alongside his father. Influenced early on by Joel Barber—a pioneering decoy collector and family friend—Nevin came to view these hand-carved wooden lures as America's only truly indigenous art form, blending functionality with folk-art ingenuity. After serving in the military and studying at the University of Maryland and the University of California, he and his wife, Gladys, opened an art gallery and antique shop in Quakertown, Pennsylvania, which they operated for over 50 years. It was in mid-life, during the late 1960s and early 1970s, that Nevin fully transitioned to creating art, establishing a workshop to teach intaglio techniques while producing his own works. He remained active through the 1990s, focusing almost exclusively on decoy subjects, and his pieces gained international recognition among collectors of wildlife and Americana art.
Nevin's technique centered on aquatint etching—an intaglio printmaking process that allows for rich tonal gradients, fine lines, and atmospheric depth—often enhanced with hand-coloring for vibrant, lifelike results. He began by selecting authentic working decoys from his personal collection or those borrowed from fellow enthusiasts, meticulously studying their forms, aged paint layers, and regional characteristics. Using acid-etched metal plates to create textured impressions, he produced limited editions (typically 150 or fewer), pulling each print by hand and adding watercolor accents for subtle shading and authenticity. This method combined academic precision with a nod to the rustic origins of his subjects, resulting in hyper-detailed realism that captures every chip, feather pattern, and weathered surface.
In his creative process, Nevin approached each piece as a "portrait" of the decoy, aiming to document and preserve the heritage of American waterfowl hunting traditions. He often inscribed works with details such as the decoy's origin (e.g., Long Island, N.Y.) and the carving date (1988 here, referring to the original artifact), drawing on historical examples from the early 20th century. His studio in Pennsylvania served as both a workspace and a teaching hub, where he refined plates across multiple states to achieve perfect balance among shadow, texture, and color. This dedication to authenticity and craftsmanship made his prints highly sought after, appearing in galleries, auctions, and private collections—much like this striking loon decoy, a testament to Nevin's lifelong mission to celebrate overlooked folk masterpieces.
