Late 19th–Early 20th Century Southeast Asian Hand-Carved Wooden Kinnari Figure
A finely hand-carved wooden sculpture depicting a Kinnari, the celestial half-woman, half-bird being from Southeast Asian Buddhist tradition. Dating to the late 19th or early 20th century, this piece reflects the devotional temple carving traditions of Thailand or Burma (Myanmar), where Kinnaris appear as symbols of grace, virtue, and divine protection.
The figure kneels in reverence with hands joined in Anjali Mudra, a gesture of prayer and respect. Her serene, contemplative expression is framed by an elaborate tiered crown and carved jewelry. The torso remains elegantly human, while the reverse reveals beautifully detailed wings with layered feather carving — a hallmark of traditional Kinnari iconography.
The stepped base features geometric fret motifs reminiscent of temple architectural elements. The surface shows a richly developed patina with softened contours, traces of old pigment, and natural aging consistent with a piece of this period. The finish gives the sculpture a subtle metallic effect while retaining the warmth of carved wood.
This work carries both sculptural presence and spiritual resonance — equally compelling in a meditation space, curated Asian art collection, or layered global interior.
