Vintage Robinson Ransbottom "Prowling Lion" Art Pottery Sculpture
A powerful statement of Mid-Century Americana, this large 14.25" ceramic lion was a flagship decorative piece for the Robinson Ransbottom Pottery Company (R.R.P. Co.) of Roseville, Ohio. A departure from their traditional utilitarian stoneware, this figure famously graced the cover of the company’s 1973 catalog. The "prowling" pose is expertly sculpted with a heavy, detailed mane and a majestic facial expression, all finished in a brilliant high-gloss honey-tan and charcoal glaze. With its impressive scale and dynamic form, this lion serves as a sophisticated focal point for a library, executive desk, or mantle.
Condition
Excellent Vintage Condition. This sculpture is structurally sound with no chips, cracks, or professional repairs. The high-gloss glaze remains vibrant and uniform. Consistent with authentic 1970s R.R.P. Co. pottery, the surface exhibits fine, age-appropriate glaze crazing (minute hairline cracks beneath the surface) that confirms its vintage status. The underside shows minor, expected shelf wear on the unglazed paw pads.
This prowling lion offers a rare opportunity to own an iconic piece of 1970s Ohio art pottery history, blending fierce Mid-Century modern form with the craftsmanship of a legendary American pottery.
