Description
A beautifully cast 19th-century Nepalese bronze figure of Green Tara (Tibetan: Jetsun Dölma), the beloved female bodhisattva of compassion, swift protection, and enlightened action in Tibetan Buddhism.
Green Tara is depicted seated in lalitāsana (royal ease posture), with her right leg gracefully extended and resting upon a lotus support — symbolizing her readiness to rise and assist all beings. Her left leg remains folded in meditation. The right hand is shown in varada mudra, the gesture of boon-giving and generosity, while the left hand is raised in a teaching/protective gesture and holds the stem of an utpala (blue lotus) that blossoms beside her shoulder.
She wears a finely detailed five-leaf crown representing the Five Buddha Families, along with elaborate earrings, layered necklaces, armlets, bracelets, anklets, and a delicately incised lower garment. A sash drapes elegantly across her torso. The serene facial expression — with gently downcast eyes and a subtle smile — conveys compassion and calm authority.
The substantial rectangular pedestal base is richly incised with scrolling floral motifs, geometric ornament, and auspicious Buddhist designs. The underside of the base also shows traditional incised detailing consistent with Himalayan lost-wax casting methods.
The bronze retains a deep, naturally aged dark patina with warm undertones, enhancing the sculptural depth and surface detail.
This piece reflects classic Newar craftsmanship from the Kathmandu Valley and would make a striking addition to a curated interior, meditation space, or serious Asian art collection.
