Original oil on canvas portrait by listed American artist Frank Tolles Chamberlin (1873–1961), born in Chelsea, Massachusetts. Chamberlin studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and at the Académie Julian in Paris, and exhibited at major institutions including the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. He is recognized for his academically grounded portraiture and mural work.
This early 20th-century composition depicts a bearded gentleman in formal attire holding an open book, set against a rich, dark red ground. The restrained palette, careful modeling, and psychological presence reflect Chamberlin’s academic training and alignment with American realist traditions of the period.
