Watercolor painting by guido de bonis, figure. Italy, 1961
origin italy
period 1961
author guido de bonis (1931 – 2013) was an italian contemporary painter, sculptor, and artist, active mainly in the second half of the 20th century with an eclectic and surreal style. Born in turin to a family with military traditions (his father, a carabinieri commander, died in service), de bonis trained artistically in piedmont, joining the informal group surfanta (or sur-fanta) in the 1960s, alongside figures such as italo cremona, raffaele pontecorvo, mario molinari, kiki macciotta, lamberto camerini, and dionisia. This context led him to develop a surreal, dreamlike, and fairy-tale style of painting, with fantastical, oriental, and poetic elements. His work is characterized by a fascinating and dreamlike universe: compositions with stylized human figures, imaginary landscapes, marine apparitions, lunar traps, street musicians, and oriental or exotic themes, rendered with textured brushstrokes, intense colors, and an atmosphere reminiscent of an oriental fairy tale or dream. He alternated between oils on canvas, tempera, drawings, mixed media, and even sculpture, maintaining an eclectic approach that blends surrealism, informal art, and narrative suggestions. He exhibited in italy and abroad (including modernart in new york and saint moritz), with solo and anthological exhibitions (e.g., an important retrospective at palazzo lomellini in carmagnola in 2016). His works are present in private collections and have circulated in the italian contemporary art market, with recognition as one of the most unique and poetic turin artists of the post-war period.
