Subject and Style: The work portrays the Supreme Poet Dante Alighieri flanked by his muse Beatrice Portinari. Dante is depicted wearing the traditional headdress and laurel wreath, clutching a volume (the Divine Comedy) at his side; Beatrice appears in elegantly draped noble robes, with a regal and serene attitude. The sculpture is distinguished by the refined modeling of the faces and the natural flow of the robes, typical of the Romantic and Neoclassical tastes of the 19th century.

Material and Finish: The sculpture is cast in bronze with a splendid original dark patina that attests to its antiquity.
