Rare and elegant Tutsi lidded basket on foot (igiseke), from the Great Lakes region of Africa (Rwanda / Burundi), early 20th century. Made using the traditional coiled basketry technique, this igiseke is distinguished by the exceptional fineness of its weaving, its dark linear geometric patterns, and its slender, sculptural form resting on a small circular foot. The tall conical lid is finished with a looped handle. In Tutsi culture, the igiseke was a prestige object, traditionally used for storing milk, grain, or other valuable goods, and closely associated with social status and hospitality.

Condition: very good original condition with a fine, warm patina. Height: 32.5 cm. See less
