At the center of the composition are a young lady and a gentleman dressed in 18th-century attire, seated on a stone bench, intent on

reading a book. The scene conveys intimacy, elegance, and harmony, enhanced by a subtle visual dialogue between the two figures.

The naturalistic setting, rich in lush vegetation and flowers, combined with the refined draftsmanship, creates a poetic and intimate atmosphere.

The antique artwork is signed lower right A. Hadamard, a French painter and illustrator specializing in gallant scenes.

Auguste Hadamard (1823–1886) was born in Metz (Moselle) and studied under the painter Paul Delaroche.

He regularly exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris, the most important official exhibition in France, from 1846 to 1880.

He lived and worked during the 19th century, a period of intense artistic activity in France, dominated by academic art, yet influenced by movements

such as Romanticism and Realism.

The painting is housed in a period gilt frame in pure gold leaf, finely crafted, which further enhances its historical and decorative value.

Both the oil painting and the frame have been professionally and carefully restored.
