An exceptional, large-scale, vertically formatted work entitled “Duel of Knights,” 18th century. These works were typically displayed on boiseries, decorative wall coverings originating in 17th-century France, consisting of panels or moldings, traditionally made of wood, applied to add elegance, warmth, and texture. They often featured a slightly naive style, but always depicted scenes of pastoral life, gallantry, and aristocratic scenes. They were very popular in the bourgeois bastides (fortresses) of Provence.

In this case, the foreground depicts the duel of knights that gives the work its title. The knights face each other on horseback, aiming their weapons. Behind them is a walled city, although the background is mostly occupied by a mountainous landscape and a cloudy sky above it.
