Watercolor on linen, “Duel of Knights,” French School, 18th century – France
An exceptional, large-scale, vertically formatted work entitled “Duel of Knights,” 18th century. These works were typically displayed on boiseries, decorative wall coverings originating in 17th-century France, consisting of panels or moldings, traditionally made of wood, applied to add elegance, warmth, and texture. They often featured a slightly naive style, but always depicted scenes of pastoral life, gallantry, and aristocratic scenes. They were very popular in the bourgeois bastides (fortresses) of Provence.
In this case, the foreground depicts the duel of knights that gives the work its title. The knights face each other on horseback, aiming their weapons. Behind them is a walled city, although the background is mostly occupied by a mountainous landscape and a cloudy sky above it. On the left side rises a majestic tree that creates a strong verticality and contrasts with the depth of the horizon.
The use of light is particularly refined: the sunset sky is tinged with warm tones, creating an idyllic and romantic atmosphere. The atmospheric perspective, highlighted by the cooler, softer tones toward the background, adds depth and gives the work a sense of spaciousness. It is a work of great beauty and visual impact, capable of captivating the viewer and transporting them to a poetic and timeless world.
