Authentic 19th-Century Chinese Qing Dynasty Dragon Altar Console Table
This exceptional Qing Dynasty altar table (circa 1800–1850) is a masterful example of traditional Chinese artistry and structural ingenuity. Measuring 67" wide, this statement piece was hand-crafted from solid Northern Elm (Jumu), a wood prized for its density and beautiful grain.
The table features a narrow, elegant profile perfect for an entryway, hallway, or behind a sofa. It is distinguished by its high-relief hand-carvings, showcasing auspicious dragons and scrolling foliage on the spandrels, symbols of power and longevity. The side panels exhibit intricate pierced openwork in a classic "Double Ruyi Cloud" design, providing a sense of lightness to the robust solid-wood construction.
True to its period, the table utilizes traditional sunmao (mortise-and-tenon) joinery with visible wooden peg reinforcements. It remains remarkably sturdy without the use of modern metal nails or adhesives. The original red and black lacquer finish has aged into a stunning, heavily distressed patina—a feature highly sought after by collectors as proof of its 200-year history.
Condition:
Overall: Good; structurally sound with original period joinery.
Finish: Authentic distressed patina with significant lacquer loss and "honest wear" on the top surface. Natural craquelure and minor surface abrasions are present, consistent with age and ceremonial use.
Integrity: Carvings are remarkably well-preserved with no major missing sections or structural cracks.
