The map covers southern New Spain from the Gulf of Mexico to the Pacific Ocean, including the Yucatán Peninsula, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama, offering a coherent French geographic vision of Mesoamerica on the eve of major political change. Bonne served as Ingénieur-Hydrographe de la Marine and chief cartographer at the Dépôt de la Marine in Paris, where he succeeded Jacques-Nicolas Bellin.
