This finely engraved late-18th-century map depicts southern Mexico and Central America, titled Partie Méridionale de l’Ancien Mexique ou de la Nouvelle Espagne, engraved circa 1780 by Rigobert Bonne, one of the most influential figures in Enlightenment-era French cartography. The map covers southern New Spain from the Gulf of Mexico to the Pacific Ocean, including the Yucatán Peninsula, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama, offering a coherent French geographic vision of Mesoamerica on the eve of major political change. Bonne served as Ingénieur-Hydrographe de la Marine and chief cartographer at the Dépôt de la Marine in Paris, where he succeeded Jacques-Nicolas Bellin. His work marked a decisive shift toward scientific, measurement-based cartography, emphasizing clarity, standardized projection, and the careful synthesis of contemporary travel accounts and colonial intelligence. This map belongs to Bonne’s mature period and exemplifies his restrained yet highly legible engraving style. The geography is rendered with precision and balance. Coastlines along both the Gulf of Mexico and the Pacific are clearly articulated, while mountain ranges, river systems, and inland settlements structure the interior. Key regions such as Yucatán, Chiapas, Guatemala, and the Isthmus of Panama are shown in detail, reflecting their strategic importance within the Spanish colonial world. Ports, capes, and maritime routes underscore the map’s practical and geopolitical relevance. Visually calm and architecturally strong, the map’s wide horizontal format, fine line work, and generous margins give it strong decorative appeal. It works exceptionally well framed in both classic and contemporary interiors, whether as a standalone statement or as part of a broader group of Enlightenment-era maps of the Americas. It appeals equally to collectors of colonial cartography and to interior designers seeking historically grounded yet understated wall pieces.
Condition report: Good antique condition. Light age toning and minor handling wear consistent with 18th-century copperplate engraving. Original centerfold as issued. Clean impression with strong legibility; margins ample for framing. Framing tips: Best framed in dark walnut or ebonized wood with a generous ivory or warm off-white mat. Museum glass recommended to enhance contrast and preserve the fine engraved detail. Particularly effective as a wide-format focal piece.
