This low Japanese tansu was made between the end of the Meiji period and the beginning of the Taishō period (c.1868–1926), a time of transition in which domestic furniture began to adapt to new ways of life without abandoning traditional solutions. Pieces like this were designed for everyday, practical use, close to the ground, in keeping with the Japanese way of life. Made of Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica), a light, aromatic, and moisture-resistant wood, this tansu combines a simple structure with highly functional organization.
