This Japanese multi-drawer cabinet dates from the Meiji period (1868–1912), a pivotal moment when Japan opened itself to the world and underwent major social and economic change. Furniture from this era retained traditional forms while becoming increasingly practical, designed to support a more active and organized daily life. The piece is made from a combination of paulownia wood (Paulownia spp.) and Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica). Paulownia, light and stable, was commonly used for drawers, while cedar provided strength to the structure. This pairing was typical for furniture intended for frequent use, whether in domestic interiors, workshops, shops or apothecaries. The front features a carefully balanced arrangement of drawers in varying sizes, all fitted with recessed metal pulls for durability and ease of use. The deep patina, natural wear and surface marks add authenticity and character, reflecting years of real use. A strong and expressive piece, ideal as a chest, storage cabinet or focal point in contemporary interiors that value history and presence. The state of conservation is optimal, except for the characteristic imperfections of any antique produced by the passage of time.Give a point of originality to your home with a unique piece, which merges with the contemporary style bringing personality to your home. This antique Japanese chest of drawers can be combined with any of our benches or with our available antique vases.
