* a monotype is a unique piece, as only a single, non-reproducible print is possible from the prepared printing plate. It is considered a hybrid form of painting and printmaking, in which paint is applied to a flat surface (paper, glass, metal, acrylic glass) and then transferred to paper by hand rubbing or pressing, often by drawing on the back of the paper to create texture. Spontaneity and chance play a significant role, making monotype a freer technique well-suited for first experiments.
