The work was likely executed during Gowdy's travels with William Merritt Chase during the summer of 1910. She accompanied the illustrious artist in Italy and was a chaperone to a group of forty artists under his tutelage. Painted in oil on canvas, and measuring 10.25 x 14.25 inches, "View of Venice," 1910 is signed and dated at the lower right. The painting is fitted in a period-appropriate frame and ready to hang.

Born in Xenia, Ohio, Baker was a graduate of Monmouth College in Monmouth, Illinois. She further studied at the Cooper Union, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and the Cowles Art School on Boston. Her instructors included William M. Chase and H. Siddons Mowbray.

Baker had studios in New York City and in Greenwich, Connecticut. The former was located beside Bryant Park. A noted portrait and watercolor artist, Gowdy founded the Aquarellists, an American art society that encouraged painting with pure transparent watercolor pigments without the use of white. See less
