19th Century Nepalese Bronze Lokeshvara (Padmapani) on Chimera
Details
A finely cast late 19th-century Nepalese bronze depicting Lokeshvara in the form of Padmapani (Avalokiteshvara), the bodhisattva of compassion. Padmapani is shown holding a jeweled lotus stem, with Amitabha Buddha seated in his high chignon, identifying him as an emanation of the Lotus family.
The figure is seated in royal ease (lalitasana) atop a stylized chimera-like mythical creature, a motif associated with Newari Buddhist sculpture. The chimera rests on a lotus-shaped tray, which is supported by a tall oblong pedestal with double rows of lotus petals, a characteristic Nepalese compositional device of the period.
Cast using the lost-wax method, the sculpture retains a rich, dark patina with subtle surface wear consistent with age. The modeling, proportions, and iconography are consistent with Newari workshop production of the late 1800s, created for Buddhist devotional use and for the Himalayan trade.
Provenance:
From the private collection of Kenneth Merkle, noted San Diego–based collector of Himalayan and Asian religious art.

This sculpture combines refined Newari craftsmanship, powerful Buddhist symbolism, and strong architectural presence from its elevated lotus base.
