This antique shop sign is estimated to date between the 1850s-1890s and was common in France. The frame is forged iron and has a taper candle holder on each side. The bird is either made from sheet iron or zinc and is hand painted to depict a partridge. In 19th century France, game birds were commonly depicted in shop signs. Specifically, the partridge was often depicted, reflecting its status in hunting culture. These served as advertisements but also reflected the local culture and the importance of hunting in French society of that era.
Both of the birds legs can alternately fit over the post. When hung, the frame swings freely around the bird. We imagine because this was likely hung outside to attract customers, it probably spun in the wind in a delightful way!
Dimensions of frame: 18.5"W, 15.5"H, 2.5"D; Dimensions of bird: 10.5"H, 6"W, 4"D. Colors of the partridge include: Dark green light yellow/beige, brown & black.
