CV Peterson (Eau Claire/Chicago) is a multidisciplinary artist whose work fuses scientific exploration with creative expression to examine the adaptability of nature and the intricate relationships within ecological systems. Utilizing sculpture, installation, performance, and painting, Peterson’s practice explores the tension between human influence and the organic processes of the natural world.
At the heart of their current work is a series of innovative fungal sculptures created from Mycofoam, a biodegradable material designed as a sustainable alternative to Styrofoam. These living forms evolve through organic growth, symbolizing nature’s unpredictable beauty and agency while questioning humanity’s attempt to control and reshape the environment.
Peterson has exhibited in prominent venues across the globe, including the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, BIONEERS Conference, Terrain Biennial, and the CICA Museum (South Korea). Their work has toured Europe with Universal Sea, and they have participated in international exhibitions at the Shanghai Zhu Qizhan Art Museum (China) and the Nobel Conference on Climate Change at Gustavus Adolphus College. Peterson’s residency experiences include the Arteles Creative Center in Finland and the Buena Vista Artist Colony in Georgia.
Holding both an MFA and BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and a BA from Gustavus Adolphus College (where they graduated magna cum laude and were inducted into Phi Beta Kappa), Peterson combines academic rigor with hands-on experimentation. Beyond their studio practice, Peterson curates exhibitions focused on eco-art in Chicago and Eau Claire and teaches at the University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire. They are also the Founder and Director of Envisage Art Retreat, an immersive space for artistic reflection, research, and project development.
