From inside the dust jacket :
Keith Haring (1958-1990) first achieved notoriety in the early 1980's when he appropriated the slatelike panels used for advertising posters in the New York City subway for rapidly executed chalk drawings. By 1984 he had brought his underground art up to street level and into some of the world's most prestigious museums and galleries. At the time of his death from AIDS-related diseases, Haring's populist art had earned the admiration of a huge international public, including children, social activists, media celebrities, and key figures in the art intelligentsia.
The instant appeal of Haring's art was rooted in his invention of an ingeniously eloquent iconography for a media-friendly age, with an immediately recognizable vocabulary of images--radiant child, barking dog, flying saucer--and such universally resonant symbols as the halo, the cross, the pyramid, and the heart. With the spread of drug abuse and AIDS in the big cities, the artist's work became increasingly agitated, sounding an earnest note of alarm while retaining its intrinsic childlike aura. A man of tremendous virility, his creative energy at the service of social causes.
This book, the first comprehensive monograph on Haring, reveals the full range of his diverse œuvre in over two hundred reproductions of his murals and other paintings, drawings and sculpture, performance and video art. Many works are illustrated here for the first time. The social and aesthetic significance of Haring's work is addressed in essays by respected curator Germano Celant and Barry Blinderman, an expert on the graffiti art phenomenon. David Galloway, professor of art history at the University of Bochurn, Germany, discusses Haring's subtly expressive sculptural idiom, while Bruce D. Kurtz of the Phoenix Art Museum contributes an appraisal of the artist's place in the homoerotic art of America. Selected statements by Haring himself, a detailed chronology, and an extensive bibliography complete a volume that is destined to become the standard work on one of the most fascinating artistic personalities of the last decade.
