Description
This exceptional antique gilt bronze sculpture depicts Green Tara (Syamatara or Drolma), one of the most beloved bodhisattvas in Tibetan Buddhism and the feminine embodiment of enlightened compassion and swift protective action. Crafted in Nepal during the late 18th to early 19th century, the figure exemplifies refined Himalayan metalwork, with harmonious proportions, expressive modeling, and richly detailed ornamentation.
Green Tara is shown seated on a double lotus pedestal in a graceful posture associated with enlightened readiness and compassion. Her right hand is extended in varada mudra, the gesture of generosity and boon-granting, while her left hand is raised in vitarka mudra, signifying teaching and spiritual guidance. The left hand holds a stem that rises into blooming utpala lotuses flanking her shoulders—an iconographic hallmark of Green Tara symbolizing purity, wisdom, and liberation arising from adversity.
She wears an elaborate five-pointed crown, representing the Five Dhyani Buddhas, along with finely incised jewelry including earrings, necklaces, armlets, and anklets. Her face is serene and contemplative, with gently downcast eyes and a delicately rendered urna (third eye). The flowing garments are elegantly draped, with softly modeled folds that enhance the sculpture’s sense of calm vitality.
The bronze retains much of its original fire gilding, now mellowed to a warm golden bronze tone with areas of natural oxidation and patina, contributing to its depth and authenticity. The base is sealed, indicating that the sculpture was likely ritually consecrated for devotional use.
