A painter, contemporary quiltmaker, and … Read more Gwendolyn Aqui-Brooks, a native Washingtonian, has worked as a mixed‑media artist for over thirty years. A painter, contemporary quiltmaker, and doll designer, she has participated in more than eighty solo and group exhibitions. Her honors include the Maryland State Arts Council’s Individual Artist Award, recognition from the National Association of Women Artists, the National Museum of African Art, the Art in Embassies Program, and The Arts Club of Washington, among others. Her work has appeared on Washington, D.C.’s Channel 22 “Art Works,” and her quilt Spirit Woman was featured in Threads of Faith. She also received a full fellowship to the Vermont Studio Center.
Aqui-Brooks holds a BFA in Art Education from Howard University and an MA in Education/Counseling from Trinity College. Her career spans arts education in the U.S. and Africa, gallery ownership, art therapy, and consulting. Influenced by her travels to Africa, Trinidad, Tobago, and Brazil, her work is best described as Afro-Caribbean. See less
