1970's Oil on Masonite Male Portrait by Artist Rosamond Colomé.
An expressive piece with a lively palette of greens and peaches. Translucent washes of color frame the subject's face, and the bolder, more textured strokes give his upper body a sense of depth and motion. He has a thoughtful gaze and a strong jawline that are reminiscent of a classical bust- a very statuesque presence. This piece is housed in a minimalist wood frame with minor wear. Signed and dated 1976.
26 3/4" h x 20 5/8" w
Minor age-related wear, overall very good vintage condition.

About the artist:
Rosamond Stanley Colomé (1903-1984)- was an accomplished California artist and teacher. She was born in Mexico City, Mexico, while her inventor father, Charles Stanley, was there trying to raise money for his airship company, but was raised primarily in the San Francisco Bay area, where her family was originally from.
Rosamond studied art and received a masters degree in 1929 from the University of California, Berkeley. During the 1930’s, she traveled extensively throughout Europe, where she studied under renowned painters such as Hans Hoffman, a pivotal figure in Abstract Expressionism, and André Lhote, a pioneer of Cubism. Her younger sister, Patricia Stanley Cunningham, was also a notable artist, and the European influence is evident in both of their styles.
In 1937, she became an Assistant Professor of Art at UC Berkeley, and three years later she met her future husband, James Vidal Colomé, a Spanish engineer and surveyor, while taking a year-long sabbatical in Mexico. The two were married one year later, and he made it into the United States just before the borders closed on December 7, 1941.
Throughout her adult life, Rosamond was an active art practitioner and teacher. She eventually lived in both the Monterey, and Santa Barbara, California areas, and was highly involved in art education within her communities. In addition to teaching, she was a docent at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art and a primary member of Santa Barbara Beautiful, an organization dedicated to the beautification of the city through community involvement. Although her art was widely exhibited throughout California, she did not wish for her work to serve as a primary career, and rarely offered her pieces for commercial sale.
