Up for sale is an exceptionally rare work of art, destined for high-end collectors: a lithograph signed by the master marino marini, one of the greatest italian sculptors and artists of the 20th century. What makes this piece truly unique on the market is its extremely limited edition: the work is numbered in pencil at the bottom left 2/7. Such a limited edition (only 7 copies worldwide) usually indicates an artist's proof or an exclusive "out of print" series, making it much more valuable than the traditional editions of 100 or 200 copies.
the subject: the work depicts marini's iconic theme: the horse and rider. However, here the composition is complex and captivating, set in a sort of theatrical or circus scene. The rider can be seen astride a stylized horse on the left, while on the right and in the background appear human figures, jugglers or actors, some on a raised stage. The strokes are dramatic, rich in intense chiaroscuro that lend depth and mystery to the scene, typical of the artist's mature, expressionist phase. The artist's pencil signature (or initials) is present at the bottom right.
mini bio: marino marini (pistoia 1901 – viareggio 1980) a world-renowned sculptor, painter, and printmaker, marino marini is renowned for reinterpreting etruscan and classical traditions with a modern twist. His recurring theme, the "knight," symbolizes the relationship between man and nature/history: initially harmonious, it became increasingly tragic and unseated in the postwar period, reflecting the anxieties of the 20th century. His works are exhibited in the world's most important museums, from the guggenheim in venice to the moma in new york.
