Up for sale is a work of art of exceptional rarity and historical value: an oil painting on wood signed by the renowned artist Leonid Brailowsky (1867-1937) as found. The painting represents a precious testimony to the artist's production during his exile in Italy.
Mini Bio: Leonid Brailowsky (1867-1937), an architect, painter, and set designer of imperial fame, Brailowsky was a professor at the School of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture. After the October Revolution, he emigrated first to Constantinople and then, in 1925, settled permanently in Rome. In the Italian capital, he became a central figure of the diaspora, also working for the Vatican (his set design for the "Boris Godunov" and works for the Oriental Congregation). His works are highly sought-after because they represent a fairytale and architecturally perfect style, which no longer existed except in the memories of exiles.
Subject and Style: The work depicts an interior scene rich in atmosphere and theatricality, typical of Brailowsky's background as a set designer. At the center, around a table, we see a meeting between religious figures (bearded Orthodox monks) and women dressed in traditional attire (colorful sarafans and flowered shawls). The composition is vibrant: the bright colors of the robes and the flowers in the background emerge from the dark background with an almost enameled luminosity. It is a nostalgic and folkloric vision, executed with confident, textured brushstrokes.
Technical Details and Provenance:
· Medium: Oil on wooden panel.
· Signature: The extended autograph signature "Brailowsky" is painted with a brush on the back of the panel, guaranteeing its authenticity.
· Provenance: Also on the back, a historic label from the gallery/framer "Carlo Monti - Como" attests to the work's passage into a prestigious Italian collection.
· Frame: The painting is presented in an elegant light wood frame (decape/varnished) with a raw fabric mat and protective glass.
