Sculptural, enveloping and future-forward in its day, it speaks directly to Colombo’s fascination with space-age living and modular comfort.

Design
This example is an early production of the Elda, featuring a glossy white fibreglass shell combined with original black leather upholstery. The chair’s wide, winged back is made from seven deep-cushioned, horizontal pads, creating an enveloping seat that cocoons the sitter. A swivel base offers movement, while the fibreglass body gives the chair its characteristic bold profile. At the time, Colombo named the design after his wife, Elda, and intended it to offer both comfort and an experience, much like sitting in a cockpit.

The optional ottoman accompanying this chair follows the same design language. It was made to order by Comfort, a known Italian producer, and pairs perfectly in proportion, height and material. The softness of the leather contrasts well with the glossy fibreglass, underscoring the 1960s fascination with modern materials.

Few lounge chairs have retained their impact the way the Elda has. Its strong visual identity makes it an architectural addition to a sitting room, library or studio.‍
