John Kelly, born in Scotland in 1939, grew up in a family with deep maritime roots and relocated to Canada during his childhood. Time spent working as a Merchant Marine seaman along the Canadian and Alaskan coasts became a lasting influence on his nautical themes. He went on to study at the Art Center College of Design in the Los Angeles area and later worked with Lynton Kisteler on maritime projects now represented in the Smithsonian Museum’s collection.
