Water Lilies on Lake, by listed French artist Eugene Dauphin (1857 - 1930). The work depicts water lilies on a placid lake near Chelles outside of Paris, France. The depth perspective on this work is breathtaking. Dauphin's use of light and shadow to capture the water and foliage draw in the viewer's eye immediately. With a limited palette of colors, he has created a beautiful view of the lake and surrounding plant life. The painting is a fine quality work by a highly desirable and collected artist. Oil on panel with original giltwood frame, signed and dated lower left. We estimate the work to be circa 1920's. Sight: 15.5"L x 11.5"H
Dauphin trained with well known artists Henri Gervex and Vincent Courdouan. Dauphin was born in Toulon in 1857 and died in 1930 in Paris. He is known for landscapes and seascapes. He painted the picturesque sites around Toulon in nocturnal lighting and sunset, accentuating the effects of light and shade. He made his debut at the Paris Salon in 1880, then received an honorable mention in 1887, a third class medal in 1888, and a bronze medal at the 1889 Exposition Universelle in Paris. He produced 2 large decorative panels for the Musee de Toulon: entrance to Toulon Harbor and the Commercial Port. He also participated in the Salon of the Societe Nationale des Beaux-Arts from 1890 onward and was made a Chevalier of the Legion d'Honneur in 1895.
Art has long been regarded as a strong and safe investment. Ellen Kelleher, a personal finance reporter for The Financial Times recently wrote an article recommending art, particularly in the $500 - $50,000 range as a sound long term investment with an impressive current average annual increase of 9.7 percent.
