In 1939, the Austrian architect Egon Riss (1901–1964) designed the "Penguin Donkey" book table for the Penguin publishing house. It was manufactured by the British company Isokon. The table became an icon of English design, and its organic form is an early example of working with molded plywood. In 1963, Isokon commissioned the British designer Ernest Race (1913–1964) to design a new version of the table. The "Penguin Donkey Mark 2" was more streamlined than its predecessor and featured a flat surface, ideal for placing glasses or cups. In a contemporary advertising magazine, the small piece of furniture was described as follows: "The revamped Donkey is a helpful creature that can hold up to 90 paperbacks in two luggage compartments. It also serves as a practical side table next to your chair, perfect for your tray of snacks, coffee cups, glasses, ashtray, knitting, or anything else you'd like to keep close at hand." The book table is made of plywood and painted vanilla. The legs are solid wood. It is in excellent, sturdy condition. A previous owner repainted the surface in the original color. Slight paint wear is visible in exposed areas. Length: 63 cm. I have official proof of authenticity such as vintage catalogs,
