additional information:
this seating group from the viennese art furniture workshop julius & josef herrmann exemplifies the high quality of craftsmanship and design for which the company was renowned around 1900. Founded in 1878, the workshop of brothers julius and josef herrmann was one of vienna's leading addresses for sophisticated art furniture at the turn of the century, combining artistic design with masterful execution.
made of fine mahogany wood, the chairs feature a clear, architecturally conceived construction with strictly linear forms.
particularly characteristic is the inlaid brass decoration in the upper part of the backrests, which underlines the workshop's preference for precise, geometrically structured ornaments. This detail clearly refers to the formal vocabulary of viennese art nouveau and viennese modernism, in which clear lines and ornamental reduction shaped a new aesthetic of arts and crafts.
the upholstery is covered with a fabric from the traditional viennese company backhausen (model "zackenstreif").
the furniture designed by julius & josef herrmann was characterized by excellent craftsmanship and the use of fine materials. Their work was presented at major exhibitions, including at what is now the mak – museum of applied arts in vienna, and thus reached a wide audience of art lovers.
overall, these chairs impressively represent that phase of viennese furniture culture around 1900–1910, in which arts and crafts and modern design formed a close connection. They document the innovative spirit and creative discipline of viennese modernism and are at the same time an expression of that luxurious, formally sophisticated aesthetic that makes the works of the herrmann brothers such sought-after collector's items today.
