Hammer prices for Sherrin exceed $10,000. Stream in a landscape sunset antique oil painting by listed English artist Daniel Sherrin (1868-1940. A lovely stream meanders through the landscape and a cottage sits in the distance, drawing in the viewer's eye. The fading sunset sets a soft atmospheric style as the light glints off the water in the foreground. The work has a lovely peaceful feeling. Signed with the artist's well know recorded pseudonym 'L Richards' lower left. Sight: 24"L x 16"H. Inscribed verso, 'On the Avon at Stratford'.
Auction records for Sherrin exceed $10,000.
Art has long been regarded as a strong and safe investment. Ellen Kelleher, a personal finance reporter for The Financial Times wrote an article recommending art particularly in the $500 - $50,000 range as a sound long term investment with an impressive current average annual yield of 9.7%. See 'Hang Your Investments on the Wall' in the Financial Times published in October, 2010.
Daniel Sherrin was born in Whitstable in 1870, and he specialized in landscapes for which he is well known.. He was the pupil of B.W. Leader and in his early period he painted seascapes, later turning to landscapes. .His paintings were often used for book illustrations and some of his works were engraved. He was commissioned by King George V to paint Sandringham and this painting still hangs in Buckingham Palace. There are 25 paintings by this Sherrin in the British National Art Collection. For a comparable example see Evening Landscape in Warrington Museum & Art Gallery.
Sherrin lived for a sometime on the East Coast near Whitstable, and also painted the shores of Suffolk and Norfolk.. During World War I he did valuable work on the design of posters in connection with recruitment for Kitchener's Army. This work is currently in the archives of the Imperial War museum. It is also accepted that as well as painting under his own name Daniel Sherrin, he occasionally painted under the pseudonym of 'L Richards' and ‘Horace Gallon’.
