moreThis is a very rare and significant vellum covered 1st edition book, published in 1677, written in Dutch, entitled on the spine as Leven, Bedryf En Doot van Cornelis en Johan DeWitt. It was published in Amsterdam by J.H.B. in 1677
The interior title page is more elaborately titled as can be seen in the photograph.
This remarkable original copy is an account of the "Life, Business and Death of Cornelis and Johan DeWitt", from their rise to power around 1653 to their ultimate assassination and gruesome fate at the hands of Orangists under the auspices of William of Orange in 1672. Upon their murders, their bodies were mutilated and dismembered by a mob and it is said that their livers were cooked and eaten! Yikes!
The deaths of the powerful and stabilizing DeWitts, along with catastrophic wars with both France and England, helped bestow the year 1672, in Dutch history, the foreboding title Rampjaar (Disaster Year). The vacuum left in their wake ushered in an overthrow of Dutch Republicanism and the ascendance of the Orangists to the seats of the most important political positions.
The book is in remarkably good condition. There is typical rippling and soiling to the vellum, but the spine is intact and strong. Most of the signatures sections are fully attached with the exception of a few towards the rear of the book (see last image). The pages are mostly clean with typical foxing. Some pages have dog-ears and minor tearing. Toward the rear there is a signature inscription dated 1695 and some additional handwriting.
This substantial book consists of 634 pages, not including title pages and rear appendix. It measures approximately 6.5" tall, 4" wide, 2.25" thick.
