Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse Signed 19th C. French Bronze – "The Landsknecht Cavalier"
Presenting a monumental masterpiece of 19th-century French Romanticism: an original patinated bronze sculpture by the legendary Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse (1824–1887). Executed circa 1860, this museum-quality work depicts a Landsknecht Cavalier (a high-ranking mercenary) in a classic heroic stance.
Standing at a commanding 25 inches, the sculpture is a triumph of metallurgical detail. The artist’s hand is evident in the intricate textures of the chainmail armor, the delicate embroidery of the doublet, and the sweeping, heavy folds of the Cavalier’s cape. The figure's proud profile and hand-on-sword posture embody the chivalric spirit of the Renaissance revival. Finished in a lustrous, dark chocolate museum patina, this bronze serves as a powerful architectural anchor for a sophisticated library, a grand foyer, or a premier fine art collection.
About the Artist
Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse was the "Grand Master" of French decorative sculpture. A founding member of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts and the Artistic Director of the Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres, his legacy is most famously defined by his mentorship of Auguste Rodin. His ability to blend the bravado of the Baroque with the precision of the 18th century made him the favorite of Napoleon III. His works are cornerstones of the Musée d'Orsay, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Louvre.
