This original abstract drawing by Yves Commerre (1920–1986) reflects the freedom of gesture and the expressive intensity characteristic of post-war French abstraction.
The Second World War marks a decisive biographical turning point for the artist. Archival records from Seine-et-Marne document his imprisonment at La Santé prison during the war, a period in which drawing from life became a discipline of survival — a way to continue seeing, recording, and maintaining a grip on reality through the act of drawing itself.
Executed in Chinese ink on paper, the composition unfolds through a dense network of vibrant, almost calligraphic lines. Here, the line is no longer a mere contour: it becomes structure, rhythm, and tension — a means of assembling the world through movement and repetition. The balance between control and spontaneity gives the work a strong inner dynamism and a distinctly modern presence.
The drawing is presented in a refined gilded frame with a light mat, subtly enhancing the depth and contrast of black ink on paper.
