In Pursuit of Beauty: Americans and the Aesthetic Movement
Burke, Doreen Bolger, et al
This monumental work is the first book to consider fully the Aesthetic movement of the 1870s and 1880s in the United States in the light of its British precedents and its affinities with Gothic, oriental, and classical art. Published to coincide with the major loan exhibition "In Pursuit of Beauty: Americans and the Aesthetic Movement" held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, October 23, 1986 to January 11, 1987, which comprised some 175 objects including furniture, metalwork, stained glass, ceramics, textiles, wallpaper, painting, and sculpture, the catalogue is arranged thematically to illustrate both the major styles of a visually rich movement and the ideas that generated its diversity. Contains twelve richly illustrated essays by nine scholars in the fields of American art and American studies and an extensive dictionary of architects, artisans, artists, and manufacturers. With 426 illustrations (94 colorplates).
