An excellent vintage First Edition full-color print of Abstract painting "Composition" by Russian-French artist Serge Poliakoff. Comes from a rare First Limited Edition art folio published by Skira in Geneva, Switzerland in the 1960s. Printed on one side of high quality paper. Numbered 5 at the lower right corner, on the border. Detailed. Rich colors. Excellent condition - minor edge wear, never framed.

Poliakoff took to non-figurative painting as early as 1938 (it is significant that he had met Kandinsky in the previous year). For him no reference to nature is necessary, not even to get the picture under way. Forms are simply props for more or less regular patches of color, arranged in a manner by no means complicated, and devoid of any allusions of symbolic overtones. Obviously he owes something to geometric painting, but his own patterning is never rigid or schematic, and always rich in endless possibilities of variation.
