A rare and historically significant landscape by the world-renowned portraitist Josef Sigall (1891–1953). Known for his portraits of European monarchs and three U.S. Presidents (Coolidge, Hoover, FDR), Sigall's landscape work is far less common and highly sought after by California collectors.
This 1930 oil on board captures a road leading toward a dam in San Mateo (likely Crystal Springs) with two figures in the foreground. Painted shortly after Sigall moved to Northern California, the piece demonstrates a loose, Impressionistic handling of light and form—a sharp contrast to his formal royal commissions.
Provenance & Authentication The reverse features fascinating historical documentation in a vintage hand, noting: "San Mateo (original) dam painted by Sigall 1930 - for me." A further inscription indicates the piece was intended for the California Historical Society, underscoring its cultural value.
