The piece is a carved and cast bagel form spray-painted black, referencing the artist's view of the bagel as "a great icon of urban living" and "evocative of the eternal cycle of city life." The black spray paint serves as what Liden describes as "a romantic tribute to the darkness and grime, which are essential and beautiful characteristics of our city."
Swedish-born, New York-based artist Hanna Liden (b. 1976) had her first bagel upon arriving in New York in 1998 when she moved into the Chelsea Hotel. The bagel sculpture series references both Oldenburg's Pop art exaggerations and Brancusi's Modernist columns while adding Liden's signature "goth blackness transforming the pure into the punk."
