Boilly, Humorous Designs, Satirical Lithograph, c.1823 : This lithograph is the original English title page for Humorous Designs, the celebrated satirical series by Louis-Léopold Boilly, published in London by E. & C. McLean between circa 1823 and 1828. The title introduces the themes that define the series: exaggerated facial expression, social satire, and the contemporary fascination with physiognomy—the belief that inner character could be read through outward appearance. Boilly was one of the pioneers of lithography in France and among its most brilliant practitioners.
