A pair of English traditional portraits by M. Moussa Ayoub (1873–1955), dated 1929 and 1931. Moussa Ayoub was born British artist known for his portraiture, active in London and Paris between 1903 and 1938.
These oil on canvas paintings are copies, painted with permission, of original portraits by Sir Henry Raeburn, a prominent Scottish portrait painter who served as Portrait Painter to King George IV in Scotland. The two depicted brothers are James and Alexander Edgar of Auchingrammon, born 1748, and 1746 respectively.
Labels read “The original picture by Sir Henry Raeburn R.A., in the possession of the Musee Des Beaux Arts, Chent, Belgium, who gave permission for the copy to be made, 1930.”

M.Moussa Ayoub was born 1873 in Damascus, during the time of Ottoman. Ayoub studied with painter Jean-Paul Laurens in Paris. They naturalized to the United Kingdom in July 1907. It has been assumed he worked as one of the art copiest team, under artist Luke Fildes. Moussa Ayoub died on 15 June 1955 in London.
His art work in various public museum collections including Princeton University Art Museum, Science Museum Group, Frogmore Paper Mill, Government Art Collection, University College London Art Museum (UCL), Hunterian Museum, Windsor Guildhall, and Royal Collection Trust.
