Graf, appreciated for his brilliant use of color in landscapes, was a native of Indiana. Following a short career in cartoon illustration, he spent several years accumulating education and experience at John Herron Art Institute, where he studied with William Forsyth, even assisting Forsyth with a large mural for the children's wing at the City Hospital in Indianapolis. He went on to study at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, the Art Students League and the Cincinnati Art Academy. Ultimately putting down roots in Brown County, Indiana, he found fellowship with the other artists working in this area of beautiful bucolic scenery. In 1925, Graf built a home and studio in Brown County and soon became an integral member of its artistic community. In 1926 Graf co-founded the Brown County Art Gallery Artist Association, this year celebrating its 100th year as an institution, and served as its first president. Graf married another artist, Genevieve Goth, and together they left their mark on the Brown County art community. See less
