This rare 19th-century Karabagh rug exemplifies the refined artistry and technical precision for which antique Caucasian weavings are renowned. Woven circa 1880 in the Karabagh regionan area situated at the crossroads of Eastern Europe and Western Asiathis piece beautifully reflects the fusion of Persian-influenced design sensibilities with regional Caucasian craftsmanship.
The rugs central field is defined by a series of linked, large-scale medallions that form a striking geometric lattice. Each diamond-shaped medallion is richly filled with stylized floral elements, angular palmettes, and boteh motifs, all rendered in a high-contrast palette of midnight blue, ivory, pale rose, ochre, and celadon green. The stepped edges of the medallions and zigzag borders create a rhythmic, almost architectural energy that draws the eye across the field.
A narrow inner guard border with a repeating floral vine frames the field, while a wider outer border showcases a whimsical sequence of abstracted floral vases, lending an endearing folk-art quality to the rug. The use of abrashed tonesfrom soft terra cotta to sand and seafoamattests to the natural vegetable dyes typical of the period and enhances the rugs unique charm and depth.
Karabagh rugs of this type were often created for local use and ceremonial occasions, making examples of this scale and quality exceedingly rare. Its graphic sensibility, harmonious coloration, and historical provenance make it both a collectors item and a sophisticated decorative statement for contemporary interiors.
Expertly curated by Doris Leslie Blau, this rare rug is a testament to centuries of weaving artistry. Doris Leslie Blau offers a broad and varied pricing spectrum, accommodating collectors and designers across a range of budgetsfrom modest vintage finds to rare, museum-worthy masterpieces.
