This stunning antique Turkish Sivas rug from the early 20th century exemplifies the refined elegance and technical finesse characteristic of the finest Anatolian weaving traditions. Woven in the renowned city of Sivasan important center for rug production during the late Ottoman erathis piece beautifully captures the harmonious interplay between classical Persian-influenced design and soft, Western-inspired color palettes favored during the period.
The rug features a delicate and spacious composition anchored by a large, ornate medallion at the center. The medallions intricate contours and soft scalloped edges seem to float on a luminous field of powdery blue, a rare and desirable hue in antique Turkish weaving. This pale blue backdrop is adorned with an allover botanical pattern composed of stylized palmettes, scrolling vine tendrils, rosettes, and floral sprays in gentle ivory, beige, cinnamon brown, and muted rust tones. These colors not only evoke a serene, timeless atmosphere but also offer incredible versatility for both traditional and contemporary interiors.
The border is equally well-articulated, with a main band displaying alternating cartouches and flower heads framed by inner and outer guard stripes filled with leaf motifs and repeating rosettes. The refined drawing, restrained palette, and even wear across the pile suggest this rug has aged gracefully and was likely preserved with care.
Woven using a tight symmetric knot and fine wool, the Sivas rug reflects a high level of craftsmanship, with a supple handle and excellent condition relative to its age. It retains its original dimensions and rhythm, further enhancing its decorative and collectible value.
This exquisite antique rug, sourced from Doris Leslie Blau, showcases a rare blend of history and craftsmanship. Doris Leslie Blau offers a broad and varied pricing spectrum, accommodating collectors and designers across a range of budgetsfrom modest vintage finds to rare, museum-worthy masterpieces.
