The tightly packed field pattern creates a fine “cloth-of-gold” effect, as the gray background peeks through the dark lattice. Surrounding the field is a series of narrow guard borders—each only a few inches wide—featuring repeating rosettes, “X”-marks, and tiny boteh (paisley) forms in brown and gray on an ivory-tinged ground. The outermost border carries a delicate running vine of stylized leaves and blossoms, also in brown and gray, which provides a gentle transition to the dark brown selvedge. Hand-knotted in fine wool with a low, even pile, this Tabriz exhibits subtle abrash and slight wear that lend a quietly aged patina.
