Its design is a balanced composition of classic botanical motifs, without a central medallion. The main field of the rug carries an allover pattern known as herati, originating from the city of Herat in Northwestern Afghanistan. It is a common pattern found mainly on handmade carpets from Iran. It comprises of a flower inside a diamond surrounded by four acanthus-leaves that resemble little fish, hence herati is often called a fish design. The main field with herati and flower heads is surrounded by a series of borders with palmettes and flowering climbers. Everything is executed in soft tones of warm beige and brown. The Tabriz rug was hand-made in accordance with traditional methods of high-quality wool. With the right amount of care, it will serve its owners for generations without any signs of wear. See less
