This remarkable antique Oushak rug, woven around 1900 in western Turkey, is a quintessential example of the regions rich weaving heritage and artistic refinement. Oushak rugs are celebrated for their grandeur, distinctive scale, and tonal subtleties, and this piece is no exception. Measuring generously and boasting a serene, earthy palette, it embodies timeless elegance with an artisanal touch.
The rug features a spacious, almost architectural layout of angular floral motifs, palmettes, and medallion forms that are characteristic of Oushak craftsmanship. Unlike the tightly packed floral fields of Persian counterparts, Oushak designs allow motifs to breathecreating a meditative rhythm across the surface.
The field is adorned with a stylized lattice of cruciform palmettes and angular vine work, rendered in gentle terracotta, faded rust, soft gold, taupe, and muted ivory tones. The central design is symmetrical but not overly rigid, adding a handcrafted charm. The border is composed of multiple frames, including a main band of rosettes and leaf motifs, flanked by simpler guard stripes that enhance the structure without overwhelming the composition.
The rugs palette is quintessentially Anatolian, dominated by soft, aged reds and muted ochres blended with sand and walnut hues. These sun-washed colors speak to over a century of natural aging, imbuing the piece with a warm, welcoming patina that modern reproductions rarely achieve.
Hand-knotted in high-grade wool, the rug showcases the distinctive qualities of Oushak woolthick, lustrous, and soft underfoot. The visible structure from the underside confirms its authenticity, with well-executed Turkish (Ghiordes) knots. The medium to coarse weave is typical for Oushak production, aimed at durability without sacrificing elegance.
This exquisite antique rug, sourced from Doris Leslie Blau, showcases a rare blend of history and craftsmanship. Doris Leslie Blau offers a broad and varied pricing spectrum, accommodating collectors and designers across a range of budgetsfrom modest vintage finds to rare, museum-worthy masterpieces.
