This antique circa-1920 Persian Tabriz rug features an elaborate all-over design of floral motifs and abstractions in what appears to be the herati pattern, in colors of striking inky blue and soft yellow and beige. The herati, also known as the fish pattern, is a design found in Persian carpets featuring the repeated pattern of four pinecone or leaf-like figures woven around a diamond shape. Seen here, it ties this exquisite carpet to a rich and ancient tradition.
The famous textile-manufacturing city of Tabriz, the Azerbaijani-populated province in the north west of Iran, boasts one of the antique carpet weaving centers in the world and produces a large variety of carpets characterized by having an especially fine knot density (indicative of high quality hand-knotted Antique Persian rugs). An antique Tabriz rug can be made of cotton or silk and woven as a pile carpet or flat-weave.
