Artist Biography: Louis-René Berge (1927–2013)
Louis-René Berge was a French printmaker and draughtsman, elected to the Académie des beaux-arts in 2005. Largely self-taught, he began engraving in 1960 with encouragement from Jacques Villon and Pierre Guastalla. After a professional interlude, he dedicated himself fully to art from the mid-1970s, producing over 300 engraved plates. His work is distinguished by its technical precision in burin engraving and its thematic focus on time, memory, and metaphysical inquiry. He received the Prix du burin de la Fondation Taylor in 2002.
His works are held in major institutions including the Bibliothèque nationale de France, the Musée d’Art moderne de la Ville de Paris, and the Albertina Museum, Vienna.
