Oil painting on poplar plywood, depicting a path flanked by a votive chapel and bustling with pedestrians in a wooded countryside at the foot of the mountains. The well-dressed ladies strolling with parasols and the children playing in the flower-filled meadows suggest a festive spring day. The composition of this small lombard landscape with late 19th-century figures is well-balanced. In the background, the buildings of a village can be glimpsed at the foot of the mountains. The painting is signed lower left in cursive s. Poma and is in good condition. It is housed in a modern gilded frame measuring 31 x 44 cm and 15.5 inches deep. 5.

silvio poma (trescore balneario 1840 – turate 1932) was known as a landscape painter with a repertoire of lake views, often traveling to lake como and the small village of lierna to paint. His intimate style also showed the influence of his contemporary filippo carcano in their realistic approach. The period from 1883 onward saw increased activity, with the systematic presentation of works in national exhibitions and lasting success on the art market.

he volunteered in the second war of independence and later entered the military, but was discharged from the army in 1866 after contracting malaria. Upon his return to milan, he frequented the studios of giovan battista lelli and gerolamo induno, both soldier-painters with whom he had come into contact during the 1859 military campaign. He made his debut at the brera fine arts exhibition in 1869, but the first official recognition did not arrive until the middle of the following decade: in 1876, he won the mylius prize from the brera academy of fine arts with a historical canvas set in a vast natural setting in a romantic style, entitled macbeth encounters the witches in the woods of dunscinane who foretell his throne. In 1877, one of his landscapes was purchased at the naples national exhibition by victor emmanuel ii. He was buried in the cimitero maggiore in milan, where his remains were later placed in a small cell.
