Unique to find a set.
Swahili culture. Surutia is the term used by the Swahili for these types of necklaces
This Ceremonial set is used in circumcisions. The round metal coil necklace is worn by Masai women, the cowrie shell and circumcising tool necklace worn by men. Some Swahili necklaces have both the round coils and tool. These necklaces are passed down from generation to generation.
Colors in Maasai beadwork have specific meanings; red symbolizes blood and bravery, while yellow stands for fertility and growth.
Purchased while traveling Africa 1980’s and stored since. Pictures show you each and every angle, no hidden damages. Can tell the age of these by the cording and metal wire used for the Cowrie shell and tool pendant, shown in pictures.
These necklaces have been gently cleaned for you and will arrive in a new jewelry box for gifting or resale.
Total weight: 1.4oz
Measures: Females 30” with a 2” spiral. Males 25” with a 3” pendant
